"Delightful
and Delicious! An immensely entertaining, scaldingly funny
play about the bad behavior good food can inspire." New
York Times |
St. Louis actor Todd Schaefer
(Bat Boy, Sunday in the Park with George, The Rocky Horror Show,
Cabaret) takes on forty separate characters in this fiercely funny play. At the center of the storm of outrage and indignance sits Sam, a struggling New York actor waiting for his big break, working as a reservation clerk in the basement of the hippest, chicest, hot, hot,
hottest restaurant in New York. Sam has to defend himself against the onslaught of every wanna-be in New York -- haughty rich ladies, assistants to the rich and famous, second-tier actresses desperate for a good table, and the pretentious staff of the restaurant itself. With Schaefer continually playing both sides of the same conversation -- sometimes playing three or more characters at a time -- Sam has to navigate the treacherous waters of bribes, begging, name-dropping, name-calling and other forms of abuse from New York's pretty and powerful, as they jockey for the best table at the right time. The colorful cast of characters, all performed by Schaefer, includes the restaurant's high-strung maitre d'; an egomaniacal chef that The New York Times described as "Hannibal Lechter in kitchen whites"; Bryce, the loyal secretary to supermodel Naomi Campbell; and the imperious society matron Carol-Ann Rosenstein Fishburne who resolutely announces "I'll stay on hold forever!" Fully Committed is based on characters created by Becky Mode and Mark Setlock, the actor who originated the role of Sam during its successful New York run. A former actress, waitress and coat check girl, Mode has written for HBO, Nickelodeon, Disney and The Cosby Show. She is currently co-writing a remake of Cactus Flower for Columbia Pictures. Fully Committed will be directed by Brian Claussen. |
